Below is the description from an event that took place in April 2021. During this event, activists engaged in a thought-provoking discussion with medical anthropologist and physician Dr. Paul Farmer about the social movement that we need to break the accelerating cycle of pandemics. We must meet this moment with a movement that ends the cycle of panic and neglect and ensures that we don’t repeat the same mistakes yet again. This conversation will explore how we can take lessons from previous social movements and apply them to create a social movement to pandemic-proof the planet. About Dr. Paul Farmer The late Dr. Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D., was Kolokotrones University Professor and chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and Co-founder and chief strategist of Partners In Health. Farmer and his colleagues have pioneered novel, community-based treatment strategies that demonstrate the delivery of high-quality health care in resource-poor settings. He has written extensively on health, human rights, and the consequences of social inequality. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, from which he was the recipient of the 2018 Public Welfare Medal. He has authored multiple books, including: The Uses of Haiti , Pathologies of Power: Health, Human Rights, and the New War on the Poor , and Reimagining Global Health: An Introduction . His most recent book, is Fevers, Feuds, and Diamonds: Ebola and the Ravages of History .

Billions of people have waited for years to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, while the entire world remains at risk of COVID-19 variants like Delta and Omicron —and whatever will come next. The IMF published that $50 billion to vaccinate the world will create $9 TRILLION in savings by 2025 — a 267% return on investment almost immediately . BREAKTHROUGH FOR PANDEMIC PREVENTION Pandemic prevention bill makes it to the critical next step of legislative process -- we're on the way to making history. November 9, 2021 Your activism BROKE the hold two senators placed on the historic bill we’ve worked so hard to pass. Because of YOUR actions, we are that much closer to passing the International Pandemic Preparedness and COVID Relief Act (S.2297). But we’re not out of the woods yet. With Congress (and a lot of us!) consumed by the Build Back Better agenda, there are only a few weeks remaining to get this bill across the finish line. On Friday Nov 5, R2H Action worked with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to successfully submit S. 2297 as an amendment to the National Defense Authorizing Act (NDAA). The NDAA is a must-pass bill that will see a vote before the end of the year. Now the fight is to make sure that Senators Reed and Inhofe, the Chair and Ranking Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, are willing to incorporate our bill as a “managers amendment”. If we are successful, it means we insert our bill text into the underlying NDAA bill — and Senators can only object to our bill by voting against the entire NDAA.
